Rio+20 Continued

At the close of the second round of negotiations in early May, after 87 hours of discussion, the UN delegates had agreed upon 21 paragraphs of text, with “only” 401 paragraphs to go in the one month before the Rio Summit! They have added another five days at the end of May, but the UN is looking for other strategies to be sure they have a reasonable document to consider at the June meeting. In all fairness to them, they are debating issues of monumental significance that are beyond the ability of national political leaders to solve on their own, such as rebalancing the global economy to eliminate extreme poverty, transforming global and UN infrastructures to support sustainable development based on economic, social, and environmental dimensions…everyone has their own agenda and everyone realizes that this is a significant historical event.
