Preparation for Rio+20

After gathering input from member nations, NGOs, UN agencies, and groups such as labor, industry, indigenous people, and other major entities, the UN group making plans for the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development distributed an “outcome document.”  On December 15-16 the United Nations community (member states and NGOs) gathered to express their reactions to the document. There was a reaffirmation of the principles expressed at the first Rio meeting, a strong call to push for implementation, and to promote integration of the three “pillars”—the economic, environmental, and social aspects. The head of the planning group summarized it well: “be strong in will and strong in action,” and he encouraged NGOs / civil society to continue their excellent participation.
