Open Working Group News

The OWG is a key process for the follow-up of the outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012 (Rio+20). We are now in the second phase of the process; in five one-week sessions the governments will negotiate the formation of the SDGs or Sustainable Development Goals.

From input to date, the co-chairs (Hungary and Kenya) have produced a set of 19 “focus areas” which they insist are NOT the goals—yet!  To see the Focus Areas broken down in some detail go to the webpage  www.worldwewant2015.org/node/430074 –choose your language and find the document there. The Focus Areas are as follows:

  • Poverty eradication
  • Sustainable agriculture and food
  • Health and population dynamics
  • Education
  • Gender equality and women’s empowerment
  • Water and sanitation
  • Energy
  • Economic growth
  • Industrialization
  • Infrastructure
  • Employment and decent work
  • Equality
  • Sustainable cities
  • Sustainable consumption and production
  • Climate
  • Conservation (oceans and seas)
