Open Working Group News

The OWG is a key process for the follow-up of the outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012 (Rio+20). We are now in the second phase of the process; in five one-week sessions the governments will negotiate the formation of the SDGs or Sustainable Development Goals.

From input to date, the co-chairs (Hungary and Kenya) have produced a set of 19 “focus areas” which they insist are NOT the goals—yet!  To see the Focus Areas broken down in some detail go to the webpage –choose your language and find the document there. The Focus Areas are as follows:

  • Poverty eradication
  • Sustainable agriculture and food
  • Health and population dynamics
  • Education
  • Gender equality and women’s empowerment
  • Water and sanitation
  • Energy
  • Economic growth
  • Industrialization
  • Infrastructure
  • Employment and decent work
  • Equality
  • Sustainable cities
  • Sustainable consumption and production
  • Climate
  • Conservation (oceans and seas)
  • Ecosystems and biodiversity
  • Global partnerships for sustainable development
