Mining / the extractive industries is one of those “cross-cutting topics” that intersects many issues of interest to UNANIMA—including women, poverty, environment, and water quality. Isabel Miguelez CCV sends us word from Peru, Cajamarca, that an international gold mining company, the Newmont-Buenaventura-Yanacocha mining operation, is harassing and threatening people in a “land grabbing” attempt. Mercenaries hired by the company are using death threats and violence to make farmers give up their land. Celia Martin NDS and Stacy Hanrahan CND at the UNANIMA office belong to an NGO Mining Working Group at the UN. For more information or to give input, contact us or [email protected].
