“Let’s break the silence and end open defecation!”

4Someone has a sense of humor. The Secretary General is engaged in a personal crusade for sanitation, and in particular for attention to Sustainable Development Indicator # 6.1, “Percentage of the population practicing open defecation.” In case you can’t read this toilet paper from a UN bathroom, the message on it underlines the fact that 1 billion people have no access to toilets, and that a child dies every 2.5 minutes from diarrheal diseases caused by lack of sanitation, such as lack of access to a clean toilet, to proper hygiene, and safe drinking water. Ban Ki-moon says “The time for action is NOW,” and “Let’s break the silence and end open defecation!”
