Has It Been 20 Years?

UN Women is preparing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Beijing. To women activists, the word “Beijing” represents their hopes for the beginning of a new age of women’s empowerment. The founding Charter of the United Nations in 1945 included a provision for women’s equality, so female officials at the UN and leaders of global women’s movements attempted to further this agenda. Momentum increased with three world conferences, beginning in 1975. The fourth, held in 1995 in Beijing, resulted in a strong document called the Platform for Action, a detailed agenda for women’s empowerment that guided and energized women all over the world toward the achievement of this goal.
