Happy New Cycle!

The newly-reopened Secretariat building (that’s the tall building in pictures of the UN) recently received a unique gift. Some Mayan elders from Guatemala gathered to ask a blessing on the building and the work of the UN, in honor of the completion of a great cycle of years. The Mayan “long count” of 5,125 years ends this year at the northern winter solstice. Of course, some interpret this as “the end of the world” and are predicting dire things, but the Mayans assured us that it marks the new beginning of the next cycle, one hopefully marked by a new relationship between humans and nature. Happy new 5,125-year cycle, and a blessed Christmas and happy 2013 to each of you, from your UNANIMA Office.
