Good News, Bad News
Jessica Ernst, our Woman of Courage for 2011, won a “moral victory” in a court case against the Canadian Province of Alberta, when the government lawyer argued that Jessica’s lawsuit on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and groundwater contamination should be struck down on the grounds that it would open a floodgate of lawsuits against the province, possibly worth millions and billions of dollars. Are they saying she has a point? However, the judge refused to issue a ruling on the case until another lawsuit is settled in May. Though the government attorney’s words would seem to be big admission of guilt, as Jessica said, “Moral victories do not fix aquifers or cancer in children induced by frac chemicals.” Jessica expects the judge to rule against water and for the government… but as a local farmer said, “Jessica refuses to be bought out.” Her case, which effectively puts Alberta’s oil and gas regulators on trial, has drawn international attention.
