Forum on Indigenous Issues
This event—established in 2007 following over 20 years of work by indigenous people and UN systems—is the most colorful two weeks at the UN, with participants at the Forum wearing their native dress. This year the 13th session was held May 12-23, on the theme of “Good Governance.” The UN is calling for the assertion of indigenous rights as well as the promotion of their traditional knowledge to tackle issues like climate change. In his talk, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told them they have the right to determine priorities while maintaining their tradition and culture. He said that one language disappears every two weeks…!
The first-ever World Conference on Indigenous People will be held September 22-23, 2014. It is a “high level meeting,” meaning that country leaders or other important officials will be there. Check it out at www.wcip2014.org
