A New Year

With all the bad things going on in the world, you might wonder if we can even wish for a “happy” new year? An editorial by Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times on Christmas Day gave us a little encouragement. He commented on the signs that the economy of Haiti was improving and that more children there are going to school. At the UN, 2015 will be a crucial year for the effort to end global poverty, as the MDGs end; in September the UN General Assembly is supposed to agree on the new Sustainable Development Goals that will provide guidelines for progress for years to come. There is new financing in January for a global vaccination initiative. The African Union plans to focus on women’s empowerment. Right now there are fewer children starving or dying of diseases than ever before in history. So there is cause for hope that we can wish each other a Happy New Year!
