Job Description:

 

UNANIMA International has an opening for a full or part-time Intern position, commencing September 2008. This position requires a commitment of one to two years.

 

The Intern needs to have a deep sympathy for the mission of UNANIMA International which is: to work for peace and human dignity in response to the needs of our world, by service to the members of the participating communities, to the United Nations and to the other NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) through collaboration and education regarding women and children, particularly the economically poor; immigrants and refugees; and the welfare of the planet. She must also personally subscribe to the values and work of the United Nations.

 

The Intern will work in collaboration with the Coalition Coordinator in carrying out the decisions of the Board of Directors and is responsible to the Coalition Coordinator.

 

Qualifications:

o       A belief in the United Nations system as a significant vehicle for advocacy for poor and marginalized people in our world

o       Experience of working on social justice issues at the local level, and nationally if possible

o       An understanding of policy processes and implementation in previous fields of work

o       Experience in working on collaborative projects and in committee work to address areas of social change

o       Interest in, and desirably, previous exposure to development work in a developing country

o       The ability to research and synthesise information and proficiency with computer technology; experience with web design would be an advantage.

o       Strong oral and written communication skills

o       An ability to speak at least one of the official UN languages in addition to English if possible.

 

Responsibilities

  • Carry out administrative tasks as required by the Coalition Coordinator;
  • Represent UNANIMA International in UN working groups in areas of interest and/or expertise and as required by current focal areas of UNANIMA International;
  • Assist in the compilation of UNANIMA International updates for the Board and the public;
  • Assist with the on-going development of UNANIMA International Stop the Demand for Trafficked Women and Children campaign.

 

 

Living Stipend

UNANIMA International is not in a position to make this a salaried position.

 

Members of communities in UI Coalition may be able to assist this work by supporting one of their members to take up this exciting opportunity. Such a collaboration could be mutually enriching and help insert the work of UNANIMA International into the mission of the Congregation. Alumni, associates or co-workers of participating communities may also suit this intern position.

 

UNANIMA International can provide

 

o       assistance in finding living accommodation in the New York area if necessary;

o       Costs for room and board;

o       A monthly living stipend to be negotiated.

o
