WOMAN OF COURAGE

4 January 2013

At its fall 2012 meeting, the UNANIMA board chose the recipient of the Fifth Annual Woman of Courage Award. We could not announce this before now because the winner had not officially accepted it! Communication is slow because our winner spends most of her time with the workers in the fields of southern Florida, USA. Nely Rodriguez (left in picture, with interpreter Julia) came to the USA from Mexico as a migrant worker.

Update on Jessica Ernst

4 January 2013

Meanwhile, last year’s winner of the award is still battling her provincial government and Canadian energy giant EnCana, suing them for negligence and unlawful activities related to fracking. Her next court hearing is January 18; her opponents are trying to have the lawsuit thrown out, and to make her pay court costs in order to bankrupt her. She says she has started to haul in water for drinking/cooking, since all the chemicals in her tap water curdle the cream in her coffee!

Are You Coming to Ghana?

4 January 2013

Our workshop in Tamale, Ghana (on human trafficking) is still scheduled for April 25 and 26 of this year. Communities who have sisters in Eastern Africa (e.g. Togo, Cameroon, Gabon, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire) might want to let them know this is happening. Holy Child Sister Cecilia Nya ( [email protected] ) is acting as the contact for this event, RE information on visas, housing, and transportation. We hope this will provide UNANIMA communities in the region an opportunity for networking and sharing ideas. S. Michele will be attending this event also.

Many of us get discouraged at the failure of our national governments to act on sustainable development issues like global warming, but sometimes leaders at local levels already are taking action. For example, some leaders of cities/ states/ regions are beginning to make a real difference in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Instead of waiting for the UN or for your national governments, some of you might find an opportunity to meet with/ write a letter to an official of your city, state, or region…or write a letter to your local paper. Ask some of these questions:

In March 2013 the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW57) will focus on the priority theme of the Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.
